For the privileged a cosmopolitan pleasure ground;

For the desperate a port of last resort.

A pot of gold at the end of an Oriental rainbow;

A thick slice of hell denounced from the pulpit.

The start of a journey for many;

The end of the road for some.

A place to find fame, or to seek anonymity;

Rogues, chancers, showgirls, criminals…

For so many people from so many lands, there was one phrase that sent a tingle of hope or a shiver of anticipation down every spine

“DESTINATION SHANGHAI”

The riveting, exclusive true story of an Iraq whistleblower who continues to be betrayed by his country, as told by an international bestselling author.

Gregory Ford, an intelligence agent and medic, was in Iraq for only a short time—from the invasion in March 2003 until early June of the same year, when he was strapped to a stretcher, drugged, and “renditioned” out of Iraq in a clandestine and criminal operation at the behest of his command, who were frantically trying to silence him. But why?

Midnight in Samarra is the shocking true story of one soldier’s attempt to speak up and report the abuse and torture he saw being inflicted on the local population, as well as secret, incriminating Iraqi arms stores of American-made weapons with bills of lading implicating, among others, famous political families. His warnings about simmering anti-American fury of the local populace were ignored and suppressed by his command; hundreds of millions of dollars in cash seized in the home of Saddam Hussein’s main banker as a result of Ford's intelligence work vanished without a trace. Ford’s information about Hussein’s location, which could have led to the dictator’s capture six months earlier, was also ignored and suppressed. As Ford was filing charges against his superior officers, they seized his weapons (illegal in a war zone), tried to declare him insane, abducted him by force, administered a dangerous mind-altering drug during a Medevac flight, and tried to interrogate him while he was under.

Years later, Gregory Ford is still trying to get justice. His command—and high-ups in both the military and the government—lied, dissembled, obfuscated, danced, and dodged while Ford endured libel, slander, and innuendo, feared for his life, and, nearly a decade after the drugging on the plane, learned that the chemical injected into him had done permanent damage to his heart and nervous system. Midnight in Samarra is the story of one man’s courage and conviction, and the horrifying truths of one of our most trusted and honored institutions.

"Not very impressed with these flashcards. I don't really care about the paper they're printed on or if they're easy to transport, etc. What I do care about is accuracy, thoroughness, and ease of use. Some of the cards meet these expectations but waaaay too many fail miserably. Super convoluted definitions and in many cases incorrect or misleading info that requires a lot of interpretation. The psych/soc section was the worst offender for this, but it extends into the sciences as well. Why can't they just give images of functional groups instead of describing it? Or perhaps giving the actual equations rather than describing them? "A picture is worth a thousand words" is very appropriate here. Additionally, they aren't very thorough content-wise and miss a lot of high yield topics in all the sections. Disappointed to say the least."

What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Blacker A Memoir in Essays Audible Audio Edition Damon Young HarperAudio Books Reviews

  • Perhaps because I'm a woman, and thus have experienced the relentless anxiety caused by the need for constant social vigilance, worries about appearance, the pressure to be subordinate, and pathways blocked merely because you are who you are. So many touching, funny, and ruthlessly honest episodes that resonate even if one is not black and thus unable to feel the full spectrum of their intensity. For example, I, too, remember feeling exultant about Obama's election (twice!), and terrified that he might he assassinated. And this particularly tasty tidbit describing our current president* as "the world's rapiest tub of Cheez Whiz" still makes me laugh through the bitterness and dismay.
  • Raised in Penn Hills by educators, I’ve always known we must support our local authors. Having been introduced to Mr. Young in Friday’s NYTimes (he gives good interview), I received his memoir today. After a single chapter, East Liberty Kutz, be assured this man can write. I’d swear this was a work of fiction if it didn’t ring so true. Now ordering 2 more copies for my brother and sister and another for the library @ Linton.
  • Step back from the topics, which range from basketball to haircuts to Kool-aid and white. Endless whiteness. So, ok, step back from that and meet a brilliant and funny and insightful and exquisitely honest writer. Then after you’ve read this, and bought copies for 5 or 8 of your friends, re-read it, cuz you’ll find lots of new treasures.
  • Damon Young is one of America's star bloggers with his Very Smart Brothas, which Young co-edits with Panama Jackson. Their blog is now housed over at the Root, if you want to check out their insightful and frequently hilarious observations of life in America while Black. Young's memoir, What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Blacker, is hilarious in spots but the bulk of the book is a serious reflection on Young's life. For a white person, this book is a must read but I warn you it is not for the faint of heart or for anyone who suffers from white fragility. Young is an excellent "spiritual" guide if you view racial reconciliation work as spiritual warfare, which I do. Nun Katherine Weston, a member of the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Brotherhood of St. Moses, speaks of the courage it takes to embark on such a spiritual fight. Mr. Young possesses enormous courage and his readers will need courage as well to finish this book. One of the major teachings of Jesus is the importance of bearing witness and that is what I would encourage all white readers of Mr. Young's memoir to do--bear witness. Listen. Don't get defensive, don't argue, don't stop reading. Bear witness. Young's writings remind me of another powerful Black writer who recently passed away--Professor Julius Lester. Lester was a freedom rider in the Civil Rights movement and he used his remarkable talents both as a blues musician and a writer to bare his soul as Young does. Lester's first book was Look Out, Whitey! Black Power’s Gonna’ Get Your Mama. Lester's early writings are as brutally honest and emotionally charged as Young's are today. Lester, as he aged, grew in his faith and tempered his observations with the wisdom of a spiritual leader. My hope is that Mr. Young continues his fine writing and never loses his sense of humor or his sense of outrage. Lastly, my sincerest hope is that Mr. Young can age as Julius Lester did and never lose hope. Please read this book with an open strong heart and listen carefully to the price of 400 years of oppression on a good man's soul.
  • A thoughtful look at what it means to be a black man in Pittsburgh and in America. Surprisingly I related to much of his experience as my own as a man living in this city despite me coming from a privileged upbringing. There are pieces here that are humorous and others marked by poignancy.
  • I'm one of those white progressives and I found this book to be great. It is deeply insightful on manhood with which I relate easily and then provides perspective on the experience of being black in white spaces. I am a school counselor and the majority of my students are of color and I think every educator should read this book. I strongly recommend this book.
  • This book has given me so many emotions that it is hard to capture all of them. Nevertheless, the most reassuring feeling was joy. I had joy, joy, joy, joy, down in my heart to stay because this reads so well, challenged me and my outlook on some things, and best of all felt like the things I’ve felt and thought like the things I’ve thought. Damon is an incredible writer, I have loved his work on Very Smart Brothas for a little over two years, and am so happy I pre-ordered this book. It will definitely make you feel something, as any good book should, and I hope it is the relatable joy I felt. Or at least make you want to have someone else buy the book and read it, so there’s more people talking about it.
  • I knew this book would be good but I underestimated how personal and thoughtful this book would be. Damon has written a masterpiece. It’s is absolutely hilarious and I couldn’t put it down. His descriptions of the people and places around him (from his wife, to his point guard on his pickup basketball team), are brilliantly executed.
I have recommended this book to anyone I know that reads and who also enjoys a good chuckle.

Wittgenstein Antiphilosophy eBook Alain Badiou Bruno Bosteels Reviews

  • Funny to have a platonic philosopher accusing other of anti-philosophy by not being platonic. Some good points are made about the Tractatus, but disregarding the late Wittgenstein position is a big miss, in my opinion.
  • THE SECOND ATOMISM "ATOMISM-OF-STATES" finally, a thinker who is not afraid to take on Wittgenstein as facing the problem of "Being". This is basically a 100 page essay by Badiou on the philosophy of Wittgenstein; taken from the perspective of post-modern thought. Is that possible? "Yes"; and in a remarkable way.

what the reader should be aware of is the fact that normally, in post-modern thought, we do not deal with language until very late in the presentation. A great deal of time is spent up front in the "unconscious" and in areas of deconstruction. After "positing" enters the presentation, language gets its fair treatment. So what happens to Wittgenstein? Actually, if we approach him at the very basic level of "being", we will gain tremendous insight that previously had been overlooked because of all the emphasis on "language".

Badiou tells us that the "elementary-proposition" is actually the designation for what post-moderns call"writing"; or composing the outline of the ordering of all "singularities- of- meaning" in a situation. It is better to call this the "elementary-proposition-picture". And , this will depict the "state-of-affairs" of meaning that exists as a "possibility" for the situation to become a meaningful "event". All "state-of-affairs" pictures of meaning exist as independent from each other. They are atomic singularities of their own that could make up a larger model. This badiou calls the "2nd atomism"; which tells us we need to re-think the whole "atomic" and "molecular" issue.

I have approached Wittgenstein this way for years; so I was glad to get the additional validation.
5 stars for the best presentation of Wittgenstein you will ever find.
  • verrry heavy and hard to readI found it
  • In this brief, though often fascinating text, Badiou places Wittgenstein amongst a small constellation of what he calls "antiphilosophers." This counter-tradition includes Pascal, Rousseau, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and Lacan. This tradition is said to oppose the discourse of "mastery" assumed and developed throughout the history of philosophy. Antiphilosophers reject philosophical discourses regarding absolutes--the antiphilosopher's position is an intervention that only registers in the form of singular, existential acts. Through an examination of Wittgenstein's Tractatus, Badiou traces Wittgenstein's central position, namely, that the only philosophical statements are statements without sense, but also issues a critique regarding the status of mathematics as "non-thought," thereby reaffirming the position of philosophy. Badiou investigates Wittgenstein's thought and writing in ways seldom attempted, that is, through oblique and elusive evaluations of Wittgenstein's literary "stylistics" as well as brief (though not insignificant) forays into the life. A difficult, overly compressed, but always interesting read.
  • Alain Bidiou is one of the most innovative and thought-provoking philosophers alive today. He ranks with other living philosophers such as Slavoj Zizek and Simon Critchley. While Bidiou and his colleagues are living, contemporary philosophers, and because of this quality write with flourish, in a lively, sometimes flamboyant, other times exaggerated style, and concern themselves in contemporary issues, many times focusing on politics, the issues which principally concern them are as old as the dawn of Western Philosophy.

So is it with the topic of this book. Bidiou takes aim at the most quintessential of all Twentieth Century philosophers, Ludwig Wittgenstein, exposes the essential features of his philosophy, and brings the tension between Wittgenstein's linguistic analysis and Bidiou's own philosophy squarely in the same league with Plato vs. the Sophists.

The essential characteristic of Wittgenstein's philosophy is not philosophy at all, but Anti-Philosophy. According to Bidiou, the characteristics of anti-philosophy are the following

    1. Any inquiry of truth, the absolute, is rejected and is reduced to a linguistic, logical and/or genealogical analysis of language and/or statements of philosophy;

    2. All philosophical values are purged.

    3. The antiphilosopher lives life as an "existential singularity," isolated, either personally or by society, frequently misogynistic and/or anti-social

    4. The wholesale rejection of traditional philosophical pursuits in logic and mathematics (Nietzsche once famously said that logic is a course of study having no relation to the world as we know it).

These characteristics were manifested in the core of Wittgenstein's thought, primarily from the Tractatus

    1. That most if not all of philosophical discourse was "nonsensical."

    2. That philosophy is not a body of doctrine but an activity.

    3. The personal struggles Wittgenstein during his life to accept his sexual identity.

    4. Wittgenstein too rejected logic and mathematics, as he did to philosophic discourse, stating that |"mathematics is logical method" but "logic was not a body of doctrine."

Bidiou describes how Wittgenstein began as a fully fledged anti-philosopher, but once he arrived at the Philosophical Investigations stage, he states that Wittgenstein simply became a sophist. What could be a more familiar struggle? (Read Plato and Socrates vs the Sophists).

Anti-philosophy is not a new concept, and not an inconsequential one. Bidiou remarks that Heraclitus could have been the first anti-philosopher. And it appears unique enough that there is not an article about it in Wikipedia. The tensions between Anti-philosophy and traditional inquiries of philosophy cannot be more acute, and is as old as when humans first began to make sense of their world. Bidiou offers glimpses of his own interpretation of the pursuit, or rather, the duty to pursue the truth, which Bidiou discusses in the contexts of Wittgenstein's own examination of the Subject, which for him was unknowable. This too revisits familiar ground; but while in the past philosophers and mystics would accept the Unknowable as Transcendent Existence, Wittgenstein just leaves it alone and examines it no further.

On the whole this is lively reading, fairly clearly presented, on an interesting subject. This book should be read in conjunction with another book by Boris Groys, Introduction to Anti-Philosophy, where the lives of prominent modern anti-philosophers, such Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and others are discussed.

Ils s’attirent autant qu’ils se détestent !
***
Mais tu me fais peur.

King of The Hood 2 edition by Kendra Sumter Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • As always this book is 🔥. Man I need book 3 like NOW. Where to start? Stallion and Stone are a mess but I love there relationship. I really hope she is ok. Stone bout to be in true BEAST mode, especially if they take a lose. I was disappointed in Banks but he redeemed himself but I don't think Bethany is gonna go quietly. I hate that heffa got my name smdh. Kimmie is a work in progress. She is so gullible and her mom ain't s!$t. Racks is just what she needs. Ocean is pathetic I was hoping she would get herself together after book one but no such luck. She is way to grown. I loved lil D, he's a lil sweetie. Seaqual is sweet too and he loves his big sis. I smiled when he called himself checking Banks. The whole dang scene at the cookout had me dying laughing. I'm wondering if the guy who Ocean is with had something to do with what happened at the end? I don't think Turtle got it in him to do it but I could be wrong. I need book 3 to find out though. I think that Stone Cofa and Hood were brothers in another life.
  • The way Stone and Stallion are with each other is beautiful in a crazy violent kind of way LOL. Neesha and Banks are finally getting it together after Banks pulled a lil boy move...once Banks was made to see what he was doing, he quickly corrected his errors. Racks is bae all day but I'm not feeling Kimmy for him...she just seems too sneaky and selfish...I'm waiting to see if she can turn her ways around and grow up. That Ocean, sad to say I wasn't mad when Turtle was beating that a**, she was getting only a taste of what she deserves....wonder who the man was she got in the car with. That ending had me screaming NOOOOOO, I need part 3 ASAP!!!!!
  • You did your thang Kendra with this part 2. Stone and Preshus are made for each other because both are bosses. Banks and Neesha are perfect for each other. Seaquel and Lil D are so cute and funny because they kept me laughing. Racks is sexy for a white guy and now Kimmy is really seeing him for the perfect guy for her. Her mom and Jamison are gonna get it for trying to her . please let Preshus aka Stallion and the baby be okay. Can't wait for part 3!!
  • I chose this rating because of all the action and entertainment from the couples, friends and families. I can't believe that after all the things that Ocean has been through, she's still doing wrong and she's still Alive. KARMA is a bad bitch and she always get her way, so why is Ocean still alive? I hope Stallion is alive and well, if she's hurt, I hope she and her baby survives. I would hate to be in Ocean's and her enemies shoes.
  • Dang this was the ish! Stone, Banks, and Racks are crazy as hell! Stone and Banks met the match with Preshus and Neesha! I love how the author didn't make them out to be weak women. Kimmy's need some help with the way here mental is set about men and money. She better get her dumb self together before she loses Ranks to someone else! Please let Preshus and the baby be ok.
  • I have a feeling that we are about to see just how crazed Stone can be, they done messed with his Stallion. I just hope that Kimmy gets her mind right especially now that Racks ain’t playing with her.Banks I see that he got his act together because Neesha is not here for his bull....
  • Who got ocean? I got to many questions that needs answers. I couldn't put this book down. Keep up the great work. Stone and banks are finally growing up my girl can't be gone
  • Kendra left me hanging thirsting for more.As usual, she leaves the reader anxious wondering how long you have to wait for the
    finale!

An evidence-based guide to using cannabis to enhance pain relief safely, effectively, and economically while reducing the risks of opioid addiction.

Opioid addiction has exploded to epidemic proportions in the US. Drug overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death. In 2012, 259 million prescriptions were written for opioids - more than enough to give every American adult his or her own bottle of pills.

Uwe Blesching, author of The Cannabis Health Index, clearly and thoroughly lays out the overwhelming benefits of using cannabis - not only to reduce the nation's dependence on opioids - but also to manage the craving and withdrawal symptoms of opioid addiction, and especially to address the pain that leads to drug use and addiction in the first place.

Citing statistics showing that states allowing legal access to cannabis have seen a 25 percent drop in opioid-related deaths, Blesching explains how precision applications of cannabis can alleviate the mental and emotional aspects of pain by modulating numerous neurotransmitters and their emotional counterparts. He presents a convincing case for the powerful benefits of cannabis in reducing the risks of addiction and overdose, cutting monetary costs, and restoring a sense of balance and control to those who struggle with pain.

"I very rarely give 5 star reviews to any book, and while this book might not be the perfect book in the literal sense, it is so needed in today's day and age that I had to give it five stars. The information is invaluable. Books like these is why I think all states should legalize commercial sales of marijuana. In Florida it's legal for medical purposes but doctor's fees are an arm and a leg and I don't know of a single insurance that will cover it and prices are ridiculous. If it were available commercially (for recreation) people would be able to manage their own pain without having to turn to drugs like oxycodone.

I was first prescribed oxycodone over a decade ago, after I was trampled by a horse I was training. I had severe soft tissue damage and a leg that was broken in half and needed surgery with a plate and pins. That was my first encounter with this medication. About two years later I developed severe arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, and ankylosing spondylitis. My doctors' answers were to put me on oxycodone long term. Again, about a decade ago. At this time I was living in the Chicago area where it was never a problem filling my scripts, but I was experiencing side effects. I was emotionally numb. My sex drive had gone away completely. I didn't feel much pain but I didn't feel much of anything. As time went on doses increased. I moved to Florida where a doctor decided to put me on Fentanyl instead of oxycodone. Then I changed doctors because I didn't like his staff and that doctor decided buprenorphine which did absolutely nothing for my pain but gave me bad side effects. The genius doctors then decided to put me on oxyodone again with dilauded for breakthrough pain. At this point I was taking 180 mg of oxycodone a day plus dilauded for breakthrough pain. Mind you, I was told I would never become addicted to oxycodone if I took it as prescribed. I pointed this out when I had gone two days without my medications and got very sick and my doctor said I wasn't addicted. I was opiate dependent. Sorry, to me it's all the same thing. If I can't take a medication and not take it for a couple of days without experiencing hellish withdrawals, I fell that's addiction and I wanted nothing to do with it. I told him to wean me off. He refused. I finally found a wonderful doctor who was willing to help wean me off of the opiates. It took a year, and it was hell, but today I don't take any type of opiate medication at all. I WISH I had this book when I was going through that. It would have saved me a lot of pain and suffering. The good news is that this book helped me realize I don't have to suffer and live in pain just because I don't want to be on opiates. Marijuana is a good alternative. The book was so informative and factual in an easy to understand manner, I am actually making an appointment to get the medical card since I have a number of conditions that qualify me for it.

If you're addicted to opiates, know anyone who is, need pain relief and don't want that horrid addiction or the side effects, I'd recommend this book to anyone. It is so informative and helpful and helps you truly understand the nature of what is going on, why it is happening, and what you can do about it. I applaud the author for taking on the challenge of this book. Very well done."

  • A well written and timely analysis of two important health issues of the day the opioid crisis and cannabis revolution.
Thanks to Dr. Blesching for writing this in the spirit of self empowerment.

It is so informative and helpful and helps you truly understand the nature of what is going on, why it is happening, and what you can do about it. I applaud the author for taking on the challenge of this book. Very well done.
  • First of all I have to commend the author for doing an excellent job of engaging the reader. The research was done and the book thoroughly details the points to argue a very challenging topic. Opioid Addiction is a huge problem and while there have been many suggestions to reduce the problem, there really hasn't been a suggestion that dramatically reduces the problem. This book falls into that category also. The most common suggestion seems to always fall on another medication, drug, or "coping skill." Methadone has helped some. Suboxone has been somewhat effective. Vivitrol and Naltrexone seems to be helping. Non addictive or less addictive substances have had minimal success for pain and may have even resulted in people finding new medications to abuse. This book really didn't convince me that Cannabis would be any more effective than any of the other suggestions so far. Frankly, we look for a quick fix and never really get to the root of the problem. We continue to feed the addictive mentality by seeking the fix in another substance. We need to move away from substances and find out what is driving the mentality to have a substance to fix our uncomfortable feelings. I am not criticizing this authors work because I felt this book was very well written and thought provoking. In fact, I highly recommend everyone get this book and read it simply to think outside of the box.
  • This book accurately and effectively shares a research based, medical approach for treating The Opioid Crisis. It was refreshing to read something direct and thoroughly, properly researched. Bleshing's writing style is well thought out and intelligent. He offers an integrative medicinal approach for a problem that so many people are struggling with... Overall, the issues with opioids need to be managed better. Treatment centers need to be created in regions where its hardest hit by the epidemic. We should recognize the potential role of medical marijuana in helping ease people off opioids. Lastly, we need to find a more humane approach to addiction as a whole. All of these programs could easily be funded with tax revenues from marijuana legalization. Bleshing has written a great solution to help us reduce the risks of addiction.
  • I found this book to be a detailed overview on the topic of opioid addiction. It features chapters on the history of the opioid crisis, the science of opioids, cannabis and pain, contrasting cannabis and opioids in pain management, opioid withdrawal, the endocannabinoid system, determining vulnerabilities to addiction and developing one's defenses, and rethinking the idea of euphoria being a side effect. Despite being brief (only about two hundred pages), I found this book to be informative, and with a scientific/academic tone to it. There's a long bibliography featured at the end, so it's also clear that it's been well-researched. Opioid abuse is a popular problem that has been covered in depth by the mass media for a while now, without being fully explained. This book was rather good in shining a light on it.

The Color of My Words Lynn Joseph Books Reviews

  • _The Color of My Words_ is the story of a young girl growing up in the Dominican Republic where "silence was self defense." The first chapter is called "Wash Day," and is where the main character (Ana Rosa) says "At the river's edge, I'd tell Mami all the special things I had thought about during the week." This is where Ana Rosa learns that her mother is worried for her. "Writers have died here. At least those brave enough to hurl words at our government." We are introduced to the rest of the girl's family, her Papi, brother Guario and siblings Angela and Roberto and also to the gri gri tree where she watches the world go by and daydreams. The ability of the girl to write effectively comes into the story as she describes some of what is going on around them (a humpback whale that comes into the Sosua Bay). It is inspiring to read of how her brother Guario encourages her and understands what she is trying to express. "He was smiling. My big strong brother who worried about our future, my serious Guario who almost never smiled, suddenly let out a loud whoop and grabbed me up. He spun me around and around." You come to know her and her family as well as the community of people in their village. I don't want to reveal the whole story so I will just say that through her writing we are introduced to the conflict of the time as well as to her own personal struggles. At the very end, she gets a special gift from her Mami and Papi, but you will have to read the story to find out what it is!
  • Reminds me of DR and just growing up. I highly recommend it for kids Fourth or fifth grade to even middle school aged.
  • This was on my daughter’s booklist for school and she’s already started to read it and really enjoys it so far.
  • Excellent! The reader is wonderful and keeps the attention of the listener. We enjoyed it this very much!
  • Timely shipping. This book was a required summer reading. My daughter easily read this. Not a book she would pick by choice but do to the readability of the text she had no hang ups getting through it.
  • Good voice actress.
  • I used this book with my English Language Learners at the middle school level. I was perfect to teach elements of fiction and descriptive writing. Students loved the characters too
  • One of the best books I ever read with my students.
